Red Fort - Lal Quila dates from the very peak of Mughal power when it was known as Qila-e-Maulla (Auspicious Fort). Built in 1648 it stands majestically along the river Yamuna. Designed by Ustad Ahmed Lhori the fort is enclosed by 35 feet high walls of red sandstone, with bastions on the battlements, and tow main gates. The entire fort is said to have cost about crore of rupees, half of it on palaces. Although the complex sustained great damage during the 18th and the early 19th century, the one time grandeur can still be seen. Diwan-e-aam and Diwan-e-khas are the main attractions apart from Mumtaz Mahal, Khas Mahal, Miti Masjid, the Hammam and the Shah Burj. It is in the Diwan-e-khas that Shahjahan sat on his famous Peacock Throne. The Red Fort has become synonymous in india now with Independence Day, 15th August ,when the Prime Minister addresses a vast congregation from the ramparts of the fort.
